a bit of fun

Just over a year ago, a couple of months after I went digital, I was eating some cherries and found a lovely pair that were still joined at the stalk. I took my nifty fifty (canon 50mm f1.8), and shot them on some white card, and on a glass plate – so there were no shadows. That’s what you’ll see as my blog header today.

Last night, I was about to tuck into another punnet of cherries and it occurred to me that there was some lovely light coming in the bedroom window. I brought the ironing board through, a large sheet of card, and that same glass plate, and spent about 45 minutes just playing around with the cherries, different compositions, angles, messing with the depth of field. I used my new Canon 100mm f2.8 macro for some beautiful close-ups, and then back to the fifty for some ‘group’ shots.

You can see the results in my flickr link to the right there. Nothing truly spectacular – after all, it is still just pictures of cherries! But you know what? I had fun! I forgot about Susan Sontag’s “On Photography” waiting for me to drudge through a couple more chapters, I forgot about the day at work I still had to make it through before the weekend, and about how there was a huge pile of washing waiting to be done…

I can spend an awful lot of time wondering how to take my photography further, deeper, and make it more meaningful. It’s very fulfilling. But sometimes, you just need to take a break from it all and have a bit of fun :)

  1. Amen to that!

  2. LOL. Nice one Jools!

  3. Isn’t it great how we can be amused by something as simple as cherries on a plate?! I’m constantly grabbing my camera and taking pictures around the house as I see light and shadow dance about.

  4. Time to take a break from all the mental exercise of postulating and contemplating. Read here – http://blog.rymus.net/2007/07/08/8-more-reasons/ ; Follow rules. Rinse and repeat, always repeat…
